AASCA Leadership Conference

The recent AASCA conference was a great opportunity to sow into the future of Central America; and it was an exciting challenge for BWAB. One hundred sixty young student leaders from Central American schools gathered for leadership training and for personal challenges. The energy level among these young students was electric and intense, for they brought with them a great desire to see change in their part of the world. Many of them were student government leaders, National Honor Society members, and other potential future leaders. Divided into fourteen different teams, they competed in team building activities, skits, speeches, obstacle courses and much more.

"E pluribus unum." (Out of many, one.) One of the activities of the conference was to memorize quotes and to explain them to an advisor. This particular quote from Latin signifies that out of many diverse people groups there arises one nation, one people. Yet our young Central American friends did not interpret it this way. They saw that out of many people would arise one leader, who would rule and control. Having the opportunity to discuss this viewpoint and to point out the historical meaning of this quote is just one example of a seed sown into Central America's future. In addition, an unexpected opportunity popped up to meet twice with the teachers who accompanied the students.

Apart from the activities, the attendees were able to learn from men who are involved in training leaders as an everyday experience: Jamie Johnson, Paul Nadau, and Jeff Thompson. Many of the students commented about the life-changing impact of the BWAB team and desired to maintain contact in the future. Only time will tell the long-lasting effect of these three days in the mountains of Costa Rica.
